Indian Workers’ Association GB's general secretary to step down after eight years

THE general secretary of the Indian Workers’ Association (IWA) GB is to step down after eight years in the position.

Joginder Kaur Bains has confirmed her decision to step back from the role, as well as her position on the union’s central executive committee, and will continue to work with the IWA’s Jallianwala Bagh massacre committee and locally in Derby.

She will be replaced as the head of the organisation by current assistant national general secretary Leyose Paul, an experienced organiser and active member of Unite.

Mr Paul started political involvement in his teens through the Student’s Federation of India and also through the youth movement in his native Kerala, becoming a Communist Party of India (Marxist) member until his move to Britain.

He is now the Oxford branch secretary of the Association of Indian Communists, the British section of the party.

Alongside his union work, Mr Paul is actively involved in campaigns for human rights and social justice, being a supporter of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
