Johnson calls for an early general election for a third time

BORIS JOHNSON announced today he will only allow more time for MPs to debate his EU withdrawal agreement if they agree to a general election in seven weeks’ time.

The Prime Minister wants to hold a general election on December 12 and has been planning on tabling the motion this week in order for a vote to take place on Monday.

He urged Labour MPs to back his third attempt to trigger an early general election.

The Fixed Term Parliament Act needs two thirds of MPs to vote for a general election. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would not back it unless a Brexit extension up until January is secured.

The EU is expected to give its verdict tomorrow over whether Brexit can be further delayed.

If Labour agree to the election, then the government says it will try to get its EU withdrawal agreement passed before Parliament is dissolved for the campaign on November 6.

The withdrawal agreement currently hangs in limbo as it has not been scheduled in Commons business for next week, after passing its second reading on Tuesday.
