AT LEAST 1,770 people have so far signed a change.org petition calling for the reinstatement of socialist historian Dr Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt as parliamentary Labour candidate for South Thanet after she was accused of anti-semitism.
A three-person panel of the Labour Party’s national executive committee (NEC) decided not to endorse her eight months after she was democratically selected.
Ms Gordon-Nesbitt has no right to appeal but is considering legal action after crowdfunding raised more than £4,000 for fees.
The “evidence” for the accusations were three Twitter posts that were on the now-deleted Centre for Cultural Change account.
The first was in relation to Jacqueline Walker, former Momentum vice-chair, who had been suspended from Labour over anti-semitism allegations.
The tweet read: “Accusations levelled at Jackie Walker are politically motivated.”
A second tweet read: “Anti-semitism has been weaponised by those who seek to silence anti-zionist voices. See The Lynching endorsed by Ken Loach, for elucidation.”
The third was: “Accusations of AS [anti-semitism] levelled in an attempt to discredit the left.”
Jewish Voice for Labour has stated: “That the NEC has refused to endorse her, on highly questionable grounds and with no possibility of appeal, is absolutely appalling and a breach of the tenets of natural justice.”
Labour Against the Witchhunt (LAW) secretary Ms Walker told the Star yesterday: “This shows that the witch-hunt against Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters is still in full swing.”
The Labour Representation Committee has also condemned the NEC’s decision.
