LABOUR has suspended the chair and co-secretary of Bristol West constituency Labour Party (CLP) for allowing a pro-Corbyn motion to be debated, it was reported yesterday.
Chairwoman Dr Hannah Little and co-secretary Paul Tasman were suspended after CLP members passed the motion, which condemned the suspension of former party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
The suspensions came after Labour’s south west regional director Phil Gaskin and general secretary David Evans advised that motions should not be heard at the meeting, according to website LabourList.
Bristol West Labour MP and shadow housing secretary Thangam Debbonaire said on Twitter that she attended the meeting, voted against the meeting being held and voted against the motion.
Islington North MP Mr Corbyn had the whip withdrawn last month for saying that “the scale of the problem [of anti-semitism in the Labour Party] was dramatically overstated for political reasons”.
His comments were in response to a Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report on Labour’s handling of anti-semitism complaints.
The CLP’s motion stated that Mr Corbyn’s suspension is “a politically motivated attack against the left of Labour by the leadership” and that the CLP resolves to demand his reinstatement.
