Liverpool pensioner crashes Starmer's business lunch

A pensioner berated Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer to his face when she gatecrashed a business lunch that he was attending in Liverpool.

Activist Audrey White, of Merseyside Pensioners Association, was applauded by protesters who brandished placards outside the posh restaurant.

She rebuked the Labour leader for collaborating with the Sun newspaper, which has been boycotted in Liverpool for 33 years for its disgraceful coverage of the 1989 Hillsborough football stadium disaster.

The right-wing tabloid blamed Liverpool fans for the tragedy which left 97 of them dead.

Ms White, 71, who was evicted by Sir Keir’s minders, said: “I said how dare he come to this city after Hillsborough, after doing interviews for the Sun.

“It is an absolute disgrace you have anything to do with that newspaper, with the lies they tell about people in our city.

“I said you are overseeing the NHS being dismantled. You brought about the biggest witch-hunt in history.

“I said I am still a member of the Labour Party and he has just been expelling people by the tens of thousands because all of us flocked to the Labour Party because of Jeremy Corbyn and they destroyed him. They lied.”

Sir Keir’s reception was far removed from that given to Jeremy Corbyn when he visited Liverpool in August 2016.

Five thousand cheering supporters crowded into St George’s Square in the city centre, forcing police to close nearby roads.

In September last year, an estimated 3,000 people turned out when the former Labour leader spoke at a protest rally against an arms fair in the city.
