London Underground workers to ballot on strike action over fears of job losses

LONDON UNDERGROUND (LU) workers will be balloted on strike action by the RMT union over the threat of job losses.

The union said today that it will “resist with every tool at its disposal, including the use of industrial action,” management plans to cut costs via redundancies.

RMT advised LU and Transport for London (TfL) of its withdrawal from TfL’s so-called “transformation” programme and formally declared a dispute over this issue.

The union said management has ignored an agreement under which changes will be negotiated which states that any changes to staffing levels will only be carried out following full consultation and negotiation with unions.

The dispute is in addition to others relating to pay and conditions.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT members across London Underground are furious at what they rightly see as a barrage of attacks from the company with the job cuts assault under the guise of the Transformation process.

“[This is] just the latest in a catalogue of grievances that are all about hammering down on pay, staffing levels, safety and working conditions.”
