A MAN has been extradited from Italy to face a British court in connection with an investigation into a people-smuggling plot that resulted in the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants.
Dragos Stefan Damian, 27, was extradited on Thursday after he was arrested on June 10 just outside Milan, Essex Police said.
He was due to appear at Colchester magistrates’ court today, charged with conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence.
The 39 Vietnamese nationals, the youngest of whom were two 15-year-old boys, suffocated in a container in the back of a refrigerated lorry while being transported to England.
Their bodies were discovered in the back of a lorry parked at a port near London in October 2019.
Smuggling gang leaders Ronan Hughes and Gheorghe Nica were convicted of 39 counts of manslaughter earlier this year at a London court and jailed for 20 and 27 years respectively.
