Met officer pleads not guilty to deaths caused by dangerous driving

A METROPOLITAN POLICE officer pleaded not guilty today to causing the deaths of a child and his aunt by dangerous driving during a police pursuit.

PC Edward Welch is accused of the deaths of Makayah McDermott, 10, and Rozanne Cooper, 34, in August 2016.

It is alleged his vehicle was in pursuit of a car driven by Joshua Dobby, then aged 23, which hit the victims as they walked along Lennard Road in Penge, south London.

Appearing at the Old Bailey before Judge Mark Lucraft QC, the 33-year-old officer, from Chatham in Kent, pleaded not guilty to two charges of causing death by dangerous driving and denied a further charge of causing serious injury to a second child and dangerous driving.

A further mention hearing was set on October 8 to consider setting a trial date.

The defendant remains on unconditional bail.
