Burgon says over 50 MPs back his bill to ban arms sales to Israel

MORE than 50 MPs are backing legislation to prohibit arms sales to Israel, Labour MP Richard Burgon told guests at a fundraising dinner for Palestine in Halifax in West Yorkshire on Friday.

Mr Burgon, who is MP for Leeds East and secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, has tabled an early day motion calling for the prohibition of British arms sales to Israel.

It is supported by 53 MPs, unions, charities, and campaign groups War on Want, Campaign Against Arms Trade and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Mr Burgon said: “The Bill has to be part of a wider campaign to end the siege of Gaza, illegal occupation of land, illegal settlements, denial of the right [of refugees] to return, and wider sanctions against goods from illegal settlements.”

The event raised funds for Medical Aid for Palestine and the Bradford-based Abu Bakr Rauf Memorial Scholarship Fund, which helps students from Gaza attend university.
