Mother of girl who died in gas explosion accuses supplier of ‘negligence’

THE mother of a four-year-old girl who died in an explosion in south London has accused the gas supplier of “negligence.”

Sahara Salman’s body was recovered from the ruins of a terraced house in Galpin’s Road, Thornton Heath, on Monday.

Her mother Sana Ahmad claimed that the explosion, which blew apart their home and also left three people hospitalised, could have been prevented.

She told the Evening Standard that she had made a report to Southern Gas Networks (SGN) on July 30 about a suspected gas leak after her mother and other neighbours smelt gas in the area.

Ms Ahmad said that SGN sent someone to investigate the leak the following day but she was told there were no major issues.

“The saddest thing is that we tried to prevent this from happening,” she said.

“The gas people should have ensured the safety of not only us but every single person who lives in that area.

“Now we’re all suffering — the whole community.”

Their MP, Siobhain McDonagh, also said SGN had “very serious questions to answer.”

A spokesman for SGN said: “We’d like to reassure everyone we are working closely with investigators and assisting the emergency services.”
