Neil Coyle suspended from Commons for five days after ‘drunken and racial abuse’

A DRUNKEN MP who shouted abuse, obscenities and made racial remarks in a Commons bar faces a five-day suspension from Parliament following an investigation by a disciplinary panel.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle is already suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party, but has asked leader Keir Starmer for readmission.

The suspension had been recommended by Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme.

In the first incident, on January 31, 2022, Mr Coyle “engaged in foul-mouthed and drunken abuse of a parliamentary assistant to another MP.”

In the second incident on February 1 last year Mr Coyle, again drunk, made comments with “racial overtones” to journalist Henry Dyer, who has a Chinese parent.

The investigating panel said: “Robust debate is one thing. But any form of conduct on the parliamentary estate involving heavy drinking, as well as aggressive shouting and swearing, is quite another.

“It is entirely unacceptable and more common than it should be.”

Labour is understood to be inspecting the report before making a further decision on his suspension.
