Labour Conference ’19 Ocasio-Cortez thanks Labour for ‘leading the world’ by adopting a Green New Deal

US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has thanked Britain’s Labour Party for “leading the world” by adopting Labour for a Green New Deal’s proposal as a major policy.

Responding to the news that Labour had adopted the policy to decarbonise Britain by 2030 with a radical package of social and economic justice, Ocasio-Cortez said in a tweet: “This is a huge deal: one of the first major political party adoptions of a Green New Deal as an official policy plank.

“Our future relies on whether our leaders choose to act now. Thank you Labour and all people in the movement for leading the world with action.”

The endorsement came after delegates at Labour’s annual conference yesterday voted with an overwhelming majority to adopt the policy, which was based on a motion put forward by Labour for a Green New Deal and sent to conference by 128 constituency Labour parties (CLPs).

This means Labour now has one of the most ambitious climate policies in the Global North.

Ocasio-Cortez rose to global prominence in 2018 with a grassroots campaign for Congress which took US politics by storm. Backed by the Sunrise Movement, she has since been a leading advocate for the Green New Deal in the country.

Responding to Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, Labour for a Green New Deal co-founder Clare Hymer said: “We're thrilled to receive the backing of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who inspired our campaign for a Green New Deal in the UK.

“Ours is an international movement to transform our economic and political systems so they work for people and planet — not for profit.

“We are building power from Birmingham to the Bronx, with grassroots activists, trade unions and socialist representatives working together to create a Green New Deal from below.”
