Ocean Rebellion protest highlights Scotland's reliance on the fossil fuel industry

EXTINCTION REBELLION (XR) activists travelled to Britain’s largest oil refinery during Cop26 yesterday to highlight the dangers of continued extraction to the planet.

Members of XR offshoot Ocean Rebellion demonstrated in Grangemouth to highlight that many Scottish jobs are reliant on the fossil fuel industry, making Scottish communities vulnerable to any change in global policies.

Protesters projected slogans onto the refinery describing the ways in which the industry is destroying the ocean – through greenwashing, lobbying, tax evasion and shipping pollution.

Branding Prime Minister Boris Johnson a “weak-willied, greedy little fool,” Ocean Rebellion called on members of the Scottish Parliament to step up and do what the government in Westminster will not.

Rob Higgs of the group said that weak international shipping legislation allows ships to use heavy fuel oil that is so toxic that one large ship creates as much pollution as one million car exhausts.

He said: “We are tired of successive backhanded subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.”

Fellow activist Roc Sandford added: “Stop the backhanders now and give us some near-term commitments which will genuinely drive emission reductions.”
