SENEDD member Mick Antoniw led the launch of a people’s convention calling for radical constitutional reform in Wales today.

The Labour Welsh Assembly member for Pontypridd told an online meeting, which included members of independent think tank We, The People, that radical federalism would bring a further degree of autonomy for the country.

He said: “It is a form of independence for Wales, but where you choose to identify those areas where you need to work collectively together with the other UK nations.

“The future of Wales can only be decided by the people of Wales. 

“That is why we are calling for a Welsh people’s convention to look at all the options for the future and to determine what Welsh democracy should look like.”

Cynon Valley MP Beth Winter told the meeting that the people’s convention was a chance to build on the radical traditions of Wales going back to the Chartists and the formation of the NHS.

She said the Westminster Tory government’s grab to centralise powers was making this urgent and it was important to “determine collectively what is important to the people of Wales.”

Mr Antoniw is a member of the Radical Federalism group, a voluntary and independent organisation campaigning for a people’s convention in Wales to ensure that all people are included in the discussion about radical constitutional reform.

A third paper to put the detail onto the process of a people’s convention and further campaigning will be produced after the Senedd elections in May.
