People's Vote multi-millionaire chairman Ronald Rudd ‘sabotages’ campaign

MULTIMILLIONAIRE chairman of the People’s Vote campaign Roland Rudd has triggered chaos within the anti-Brexit group by sacking two advisers at a critical juncture in Britain’s attempted withdrawal from EU.

Dozens of people employed in the campaign walked out this morning over the dismissals.

The organisation, which campaigns for a second referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, accused Mr Rudd (brother of former work and pensions secretary Amber Rudd) of a “boardroom coup.”

Alastair Campbell, People’s Vote campaigner and Tony Blair’s former adviser, condemned the “deliberate act of sabotage and destabilisation at this time of all times.”

Mr Rudd announced that director of communications Tom Baldwin and executive director James McGrory would be “leaving with immediate effect” in an email sent late on Sunday night.

Mr Baldwin was Ed Miliband’s spin doctor when he was Labour leader and Mr McGrory was Nick Clegg’s top adviser when the former Liberal Democrat leader was deputy PM.

In the email seen by the Star, Mr Rudd adds that a “clearer structure” was needed as “the ongoing internal issues of the campaign have been allowed to carry on for too long.”

Labour’s former head of campaigns Patrick Heneghan was appointed as the “one person to be in charge” by Mr Rudd.

Mr Baldwin accused him of making a “grotesque misjudgment” by putting a “wrecking ball” through the campaign while the EU was expected to offer PM Boris Johnson a three-month extension.

Mr Rudd later claimed that he did not sack Mr Baldwin and that he “has an opportunity for a different type of role.”
