Police accused of treating Palestine Action like ‘some kind of organised crime network,’ after two activists remanded in prison

TWO Palestinian rights activists face up to a month in prison after a court refused to grant them bail.

The two, who are members of Palestine Action, were among six activists arrested on Tuesday for allegedly carrying items with intent to cause criminal damage.

Four were released at a hearing at Wolverhampton magistrates court on Wednesday. But in a move described as “shocking” by the group, the other two were denied bail by the court.

It is the first time members of Palestine Action have been held behind bars since it was launched in August, with the aim of shutting down sites in Britain owned by Israel’s largest arms firm, Elbit Systems.

The two could be held in prison until their next court date in one month.

Palestine Action said its members have been “routinely arrested on spurious charges, had their houses raided and devices confiscated.”

Campaign coordinator of police monitoring group Netpol Kevin Blowe accused police of treating Palestine Action as “some kind of organised crime network” in a “deliberate attempt to disrupt protests in solidarity with the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
