Police arrest 78-year-old peace campaigner again

Retired nurse Lindis Percy was detained while taking part in a regular peaceful protest outside RAF Menwith Hill

A 78-YEAR-OLD peace campaigner was arrested for the second week running on Tuesday night while taking part in a regular peaceful protest outside a US military base in Yorkshire.

Retired nurse Lindis Percy was outside RAF Menwith Hill, currently administered by US forces, on moorland outside Harrogate in North Yorkshire, during a weekly vigil with other peace campaigners.

She was one of nine outside the base, which is an intelligence-gathering centre linked to satellites gathering military, political and economic information fed back to the Pentagon.

Ministry of Defence (MoD) Police arrested her and took her to Harrogate police station where she was released without charge.

Ms Percy said it was the seventh time MoD police have arrested her in the last 18 months.

“But I have not been charged with anything,” she said.

As reported in the Morning Star, during her arrest last week she was ill-treated by MoD police who dragged her to a police car forcibly, and continued the same treatment at Harrogate police station.

Ms Percy has been campaigning against the base, and similar US bases in the Britain, for more than 30 years.

The protest on Tuesday was joined by three people from CND in solidarity with the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign after Ms Percy’s arrest last week, as well as a film crew who are making a film about “Yorkshire Grit.”

“All in all, there were nine people attending the protest, with nine police officers present throughout,” said eyewitness and Morning Star photographer Neil Terry.

He said Ms Percy was arrested for “obstruction of the highway” the second week running and some of the officers had been aggressive.

Next Tuesday evening CND will again be supporting the weekly vigil at 6pm and will make “Pancakes for Peace” in a traditional celebration of Shrove Tuesday.
