Refugee activists storm aviation conference

REFUGEE activists have stormed the stage at an aviation industry conference in protest against an airline’s involvement in the government’s reviled Rwanda deportation plan.

Activists from campaigning charity Freedom from Torture (FFT) travelled to Amsterdam to disrupt the event on Wednesday.

Torture survivor Kolbassia Haoussou, who stormed the stage, shouted: “People need protection. People need love, compassion.”

Mr Haoussou, who is also director of survivor empowerment at FFT, said: “For too long, certain airlines in the industry have profited from the pain of refugees.”

Airlines attending the event included Spanish operator Privilege Style, which is working with the government to implement the Rwanda removal programme.

Mr Haoussou said: “By collaborating in the government’s cruel plan to fly survivors of torture and trafficking on one-way tickets to Rwanda, Privilege Style is flying in the face of human decency.

“This trade in human beings for cash should shame the entire industry. We are calling on Privilege Style to end their involvement in the Rwanda plan and for all airlines to take a stand against these racist schemes.”

Another torture survivor, from Iran, accused the airline of “profiting from the pain of refugees” and called on the airline industry to “stand against cruelty.”

Privilege Style is a private airline which operates charter flights for other airlines, tour operators, sports teams and other VIP customers.

It is seen as the government’s “airline of last resort” for its willingness to conduct deportation flights that other airlines refuse.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman boasted of her “dream” of deporting asylum-seekers to Rwanda “by Christmas” when she spoke at the Tory Party conference in Birmingham this week.
