RAIL union RMT has attacked the axing of an on-board catering contract by South Western Railway (SWR), with 130 jobs set to be cut in the new year.
The union has written to the government urging it to intervene to reverse the decision, which affects staff employed by contractor Elior to work on SWR trains.
Workers have been told that they will be made redundant on January 17, the union said.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “South Western Railway’s decision to axe its on-board catering provision is short-sighted and will undoubtedly worsen the passenger experience.
“Axing this vital service is completely at odds with the need to restore passenger confidence in the railway.”
SWR said it had made the decision after consultation with passangers and the Department for Transport and that Covid-19 has made on-train catering services unsustainable due to falling passenger numbers.
