SADIQ KHAN must lead the fight against cuts to green jobs and services when he takes the helm of a key body in fighting the climate crisis, transport union RMT demanded today.
The London mayor will be appointed chair of the C40 climate change group during the United Nations’ Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow, starting on October 31.
C40, an international network of 97 cities founded in 2005, aims to tackle ecological breakdown while promoting sustainable economic growth.
Reacting to the appointment, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch warned that “savage cuts” to public transport services and worker pay are crippling a sector that’s vital to cutting emissions from private vehicle use.
“It’s a nonsense, and Sadiq Khan and his C40 colleagues need to make the fight against it a top priority or stand accused of spouting more hot air,” he said.
“The obvious answer is to have a green public transport revolution in our cities where public transport services are more available, affordable and attractive.”
Mr Lynch called on the group to back public transport workers, “whose jobs and skills are crucial to building a greener future for all.”
