Scotland medical pressures: ‘Non-urgent care has to be paused’

MEDICAL experts in Scotland warned yesterday that non-urgent care will have to be paused north of the border due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Jackie Taylor, president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, said medics would have to focus on “urgent work” and the roll-out of the coronavirus vaccine programme before other treatments could take place.

Dr Taylor has previously said there will be a “cost” for allowing household mixing in Scotland on Christmas Day, with some places already “under pressure.”

She said: “There are hidden harms from Covid – both in terms of operations and all sorts of other social, mental health and economic harms which we are all very, very aware of.

“Unless we get a grip of Covid-19 then we won’t be able to open up the other services again.”
