Scotland: News in brief - April 19th, 2021

DEVOLUTION: Socialists in Scotland have launched a campaign to ensure that there is a third option on the ballot paper in any future referendum on independence.

The Red Paper Collective seeks to show that the status quo is untenable and wants voters to have the option of backing more devolved powers.

Red Paper editor Pauline Bryan said: “Devolution has unfinished business: to achieve an equal relationship between nations and regions based on social justice and redistribution.”

SCHOOLS: Scotland’s largest teaching union is publishing a report today detailing the nature, causes and consequences of poverty and the impact that it can have on education.

The Educational Institute of Scotland’s (EIS) PACT project was established to help teachers explore what practical interventions could mitigate the economic impact on learning.

EIS assistant secretary Andrea Bradley reiterated that Scottish society and teachers “should neither accept the existence of poverty nor of educational inequity.”

ENVIRONMENT: A teenage climate campaigner has accused Scotland’s political leaders of failing to do what is necessary to tackle the environmental emergency.

West Lothian activist Dylan Hamilton insisted that young people were “very, very angry” about the lack of action, telling party leaders during an online debate that campaigners are trying to “knock down your doors.”

The 16-year-old will stay away from school all this week to keep pressure on politicians during the election campaign.
