Exclusive Scottish Tory MP seen sucking up to shamed Serco bosses

A TORY MP is under fire for hosting an exclusive dinner at the Palace of Westminster for Serco, the outsourcing giant pressing on with evicting refugees from their homes in Glasgow.

Luke Graham, who represents Ochil and South Perthshire in the Commons, booked one of the exclusive terrace dining rooms for the “Serco in Scotland Dinner,” the Star has learned.

Serco has faced fury after announcing that it would change the locks on the homes of unsuccessful asylum applicants.

The plan was originally mooted last year, then paused when MPs and activists said they would resist evictions through direct action and picketing.

Last month, the firm, which holds the Home Office contract for housing refugees in Glasgow, announced that the lockouts would resume.

Tenants’ union Living Rent branded the dinner a “sign of desperation.”

Glasgow South West MP Chris Stephens told the Star: “While hundreds of asylum-seekers are threatened with eviction in Glasgow, it’s galling that Tory MPs are prepared to welcome the very organisation planning to change the locks, which has caused distress to hundreds of refugees and asylum-seekers across Glasgow.

“Every person has the human right to housing, not being subjected to lock changes and forced evictions.

“This completely immoral and inhumane lock-change and eviction programme must be stopped, with immediate effect.”

According to parliamentary authorities, the dining rooms in which the dinner was held are “decorated with antique wood panelling,” “ideal for executive boardroom meetings or private dinners” and “perfect for intimate events.”

Parliamentary chefs prepare dishes such as roasted rump of English lamb with lettuce, cream minted polenta, samphire, chargrilled baby gem and apricot gel — at £35 per person.

Pan-fried fillet of sea bass with white wine butter sauce, beetroot and horseradish spelt and glazed green beans costs a mere £26.

Vegetarians can enjoy a strudel of forest mushroom and butter-bean, carrot and courgette ribbons with baby asparagus and garden herb oil, priced at £24 a head.

As a bargain palette cleanser, a gin and tonic “home-infused spirit sorbet with botanicals granita” is just £3. But desserts are priced at up to £9 a head, including Banbury cake with port syrup and Blacksticks blue cheese.

“A lavish dinner on the banks of the Thames is a far cry from the real hardship that many asylum-seekers in my constituency are faced with,” Mr Stephens pointed out.

Living Rent organiser Sean Baillie said: “This private dinner is a sign of desperation at a time when Serco are closing offices across Glasgow to avoid accountability.

“Last year, Serco and the Home Office met in Glasgow airport and cancelled a fancy dinner in one of the city’s hotels to avoid the people of Glasgow. Now they are hiding in the discounted bars of Westminster.

“Our MPs should follow the lead of our Glasgow representatives such as Chris Stephens and Paul Sweeney and step up their efforts in forcing a suitable resolution.

“Shady corporate dinners aimed at lobbying support for multinational leeches who are inept at delivering public services will not be forgotten by the electorate.”

Scottish Young Labour chair Enas Magzoub said it was a “disgrace” for any MP to “rub shoulders” with those who make hundreds of families homeless.

She added: “This shows such a flagrant disregard for the well-being of vulnerable asylum-seekers, though, sadly, it is unsurprising coming from someone whose party has inflicted untold misery upon many through their ‘hostile environment’ policies.”

Mr Graham’s researcher told the Star: “I can confirm that Luke had a meeting with Serco and the room was booked by our office.”

Asked who had attended the dinner and what had been discussed, the researcher added: “Unfortunately, I don’t have that information immediately to hand and won’t be able to get it for the deadline.”
