Scottish Greens call for fair pay for student paramedics

THE Scottish Greens have now given their backing to a campaign calling for student paramedics to be paid fairly for their work while studying.

Edinburgh MSP Alison Johnstone has lent her voice to a campaign to award student paramedics a bursary for working in Scotland’s NHS.

More than 27,000 people have backed the “pay student paramedics” campaign’s calls to give working students a bursary similar to those already awarded to student nurses or midwives.

Half of a paramedic science course is made up of practical work, but currently students can only claim £1-2,000 if they are not also holding down other part-time work.

MSPs from Labour, the Greens, as well as the Lib Dems and Tories have all backed the calls.

Ms Johnstone said: “There is no doubt that paramedics are highly skilled medical professionals who we rely on at times of crisis.

“Clearly, they should be valued as such, which means providing them with adequate bursaries to complete their studies.”
