Scottish Greens call for super-tax on private jets

THE Scottish Greens have called on the SNP-Green Scottish government to levy a “super-tax” on private jets.

The demand for a £1,000 per passenger levy on the more than 10,000 Scottish private flights, comes as carbon emissions in the sector have been rising in recent years.

Britain has contributed 19 per cent of the 31 per cent in European private flight emissions since 2005.

Scottish Green climate spokesperson Mark Ruskell said that powers devolved in 2017 must be used to curb private flights, adding: “We are in a climate emergency.

“Aviation is one of the biggest drivers of the crisis, yet hundreds of private jets are landing here in Scotland every single month.

“This isn’t people having an annual family holiday to Spain — it’s luxury, often half-empty, and completely unnecessary private flights.

“Just 1 per cent of people cause 50 per cent of global aviation emissions — it’s time for us to say their private jets are not welcome in Scotland.”

A Scottish government spokesperson said that powers for such a tax were not devolved, but added: “Scottish ministers remain fully committed to introducing Air Departure Tax when a solution to the Highlands and Islands exemption issue has been found.”
