Scottish Labour demands urgent resources to support vaccine helpline, as thousands are left hanging on the telephone

SCOTTISH Labour demanded urgent resources to support the Covid-19 vaccine helpline today, as frustrated callers face a long wait to get through.

Official data obtained by the party through a freedom of information request reveals that thousands of people looking to get the jab are hanging up as waiting times skyrocket.

Between May 17 and June 9, daily average waits for a reply increased and were frequently over 10 or 15 minutes, the figures show.

Shockingly, on three separate days — May 24, June 5 and June 7 — over half of all callers gave up as their patience wore thin.

The helpline’s workload has significantly increased, with almost 200,000 callers in the first nine days of June alone.

Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie warned the success of the entire vaccine rollout was at stake.

“It is the duty of the Scottish government to ensure that the vaccine helpline is fit for purpose and that staff are properly supported in carrying out their duties,” she stressed.
