SNP: Scottish workers should not be abandoned if furlough ends in England

HUNDREDS of thousands of Scottish workers who have been furloughed during lockdown should not be abandoned if Westminster decides to end the support in England, the SNP urged today.

The furlough scheme, which subsidises the wages of workers laid off during lockdown, supports the jobs of 260,000 workers in Scotland.

Even if the subsidy is withdrawn in England when circumstances allow work to fully resume, it should still be paid in Scotland if necessary, the SNP said.

MSP Karen Adam said that the Tories should “learn their lessons from last winter,” when furlough was extended in Scotland only when the south of England was placed under tighter restrictions.

“That disgraceful situation should be avoided at all costs,” she said.

“If Scotland is to be treated as an equal partner in the United Kingdom, then furlough must be available if and when we need it — but the fact that this question even arises is further proof that Scotland needs the full powers of independence.”
