Campaigning for Senedd election enters final day

by David Nicholson

CAMPAIGNING for the Senedd election entered its final full day today with Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru leaders canvassing in key battleground seats.

First Minister Mark Drakeford visited the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales to support his oldest political ally, Jane Hutt, defend her 777 majority from the Tories.

The seat is a key Conservative target and was visited this week by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr Drakeford said: “Over the last month, I’ve been all over Wales.

“I’ve had hundreds of conversations with people who have told me they are glad they have lived in Wales during the past year.

“The action we have taken together, means we now have the lowest spread of coronavirus in the UK and the third quickest vaccine rollout in the world.

“A vote for Welsh Labour on Thursday is a vote for a jobs-first recovery. For a future which is greener, stronger and fairer.”

Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price was campaigning to regain Llanelli from Labour and delivered his party’s final pitch in the constituency’s industrial food park at Cross Hands.

The two parties were separated in Llanelli by just 382 votes in the 2016 Senedd election.

Mr Price said: “In contrast to Labour and the Tories’ ‘can’t do’ attitude and their determination to put Westminster before Wales every time, we believe in our nation’s ability to solve its own problems.

“That is why Plaid Cymru is putting forward such a transformational programme for government to reflect the scale of change and ambition required to succeed.”

An ITV Wales poll conducted by YouGov and published today show Welsh Labour could match their share of the vote seen five years ago but could lose seats due to a stronger performance by the Conservatives.
