Socialist MPs urge government to warn Israel of sanctions if it annexes occupied Palestine

THE British government should make clear to the Israeli government that any annexation of occupied Palestinian land would “lead to sanctions,” Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs urged today.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, one of the 25 socialist MPs in the group, said that “now is the time for the whole labour movement to speak up for Palestine.”

The call comes as Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israeli government is set to hold a cabinet vote on July 1 on the annexation of all settlement blocs and the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank.

In a statement, the group said: “As an internationalist and democratic socialist party, Labour must give real support to call of the Palestinian people and the very many Israelis for effective measures to stop annexation.

“The core and fundamental purpose underlying annexation is that it permanently puts the ‘nail in the coffin’ of a two-state solution.

“It leaves no room for any conceivable Palestinian state.

“We stand firmly against such an act of aggression as part of the growing international chorus of voices calling for effective international measures to stop any annexation.”
