BUS workers are set to strike tomorrow in a dispute over pay amid warnings of a skills crisis in the industry.
Members of the RMT union working for Stagecoach in the south-west of England will walk out after talks last week failed to break the deadlock.
The transport union says the bus industry is facing a looming skills crisis because of the number of workers leaving for other jobs.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “When drivers and other staff who are key transport professionals providing lifeline services can earn more in supermarkets and fast-food joints, it’s no wonder they are voting with their feet in the current labour market.
“It’s well established now that we are facing a shortage of bus drivers across the south-west as staff leave over poor pay and conditions.
“RMT is fighting for professional wages for professional bus workers and our members on Stagecoach South West are leading that charge.”
Stagecoach has warned that the strike will cause significant disruption to services, adding that it had offered staff a 4.4 per cent pay rise plus a £400 bonus.
