Starmer joins Welsh Labour campaign trail

LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer joined the Senedd election campaign trail today, backing Welsh Labour’s plan for a jobs-first Covid-19 recovery.

Sir Keir joined First Minister Mark Drakeford to see sustainable homes being built in Gower, south Wales, as part of the party’s housing programme.

It was his first visit to Wales during the campaign and his first visit to south Wales as Labour leader.

Sir Keir said: “I’m determined to work with Mark Drakeford and his team to create jobs and ensure Wales is a world leader in the green industries of the future.”

He denied that he could be a “liability” to Welsh Labour’s election campaign, with Mr Drakeford receiving better approval ratings in recent polling than Sir Keir has from UK voters.

And with three pro-independence candidates standing for Welsh Labour, Sir Keir suggested that “the absolute focus in politics has to be on the recovery” from Covid-19.

A re-elected Welsh Labour government will deliver a £15 billion capital investment programme over the next Senedd term, the party has promised.

This will include building 20,000 low-carbon social homes for rent, in turn creating thousands of jobs and training opportunities in the construction sector and its supply chain.
