Starmer vows ‘constructive opposition’

LABOUR leader Keir Starmer wants to provide “constructive opposition” to the Tory government during the coronavirus crisis, he said yesterday.

Speaking in a “Call Keir” virtual question-and-answer session with members in Glasgow, the new party leader said it was important to “support the government where that’s the right thing to do … but challenge where we see mistakes.

“I’m trying to provide constructive opposition.”

Mr Starmer was criticised last week for claiming that the government was doing a good job in its handling of the crisis, despite Britain having one of the highest death tolls in the world.

Ahead of yesterday’s online meeting, Mr Starmer said he wanted to have a “frank” conversation with Scots about their concerns and how Labour can “rebuild trust” north of the border.

“The road back to a Labour government starts in Scotland,” he said.

The Labour leader also said it was important that Westminster and Holyrood co-ordinate on the coronavirus lockdown, stressing that the countries of Britain must act together when the time comes to ease the restrictions.
