Strike Map and Bakers' Union launch new initiative to organise workers

A NEW initiative for non-unionised workers is set to help people stand together and fight for their rights, organisers told the Morning Star today.

Organise Now, created by unionists at Strike Map and backed by the BFAWU food workers’ union, is a “worker-led campaign for mass organising of workplaces during a period of increased militancy and a growing cost-of-living crisis.”

After submitting a form on the campaign’s website, workers can expect a call from an experienced organiser within 72 hours.

They will “listen to you and assist you in forming a plan on how to build change,” Organise Now said.

Resources and materials from across the labour movement will soon be added to the website, said organisers, who also want to offer training to build on support calls.

The initiative will be formally launched at The World Transformed, a socialist gathering which will run alongside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool at the end of September.

It is inspired by the emergency workplace organising committee in the US, which has been helping workers to mobilise and resist exploitative practices in traditionally non-unionised companies such as Starbucks and Amazon.

Strike Map co-founder Henry Fowler told the Star: “There is no better time to up our efforts and organise as many workers as possible in this country.

“Workers urgently need a pay rise — let’s get organised.”

BFAWU general secretary Sarah Woolley said her union is “excited to be part of this new opportunity to support workers organising.

“Organise Now will not only support workers, but also empower reps already in our movement too,” she told the Star.

More details and information on how to volunteer can be found at organisenow.org.uk.
