Striking British Steel scaffolders deliver gift-wrapped petition

STRIKING British Steel scaffolders delivered a gift-wrapped petition signed by 14,000 people to their employer today, telling bosses to pay the right rate for the job.

The strikers, who work at British Steel’s plant in Scunthorpe, were joined by their families and friends to hand in the petition to contractor Acatavo at its Wakefield headquarters.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Support for the striking scaffolders is growing.

“Thousands of supporters have signed the petition to call on Actavo to pay the rate.

“The scaffolders will still have their union's unwavering support in 2022.

“Unite will always defend our national agreements when employers attack workers’ pay and conditions for greater profits.”

The workers, who are in their 11th week of strikes, are calling for wages in line with national construction industry agreements.

Actavo was approached for comment.
