Striking outsourced hospital cleaners and caterers demand ‘pay rise now’

STRIKING outsourced hospital cleaners and caterers shouted “pay rise now” as they staged a demonstration outside ISS offices in Canary Wharf in London today.

The South London & Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) staff, who began a four-day strike over pay on Wednesday, are fighting a miserly offer worth 30p.

GMB Southern regional organiser Helen O'Connor said: “Our members are as determined as they are angry.

“Almost 200 striking hospital cleaners and hostesses marched on ISS offices at Canary Wharf.

“This struggle is only just beginning and our members will fight until they get the pay they need and deserve.”

The dispute has already seen the staff stage a 48-hour strike last month, with GMB claiming they are paid 90p an hour short of the Real Living Wage.

An ISS spokesperson said it is “very disappointed” that the strike action is continuing.

“Our offer is higher than the London living wage, representing 10 per cent and 16.1 per cent respectively for the two different types of contract in place at the trust,” they claimed.
