Tanker carrying Russian oil sails to British port thanks to loophole in government sanctions

A TANKER has delivered 33,000 tonnes of Russian diesel to a British port, despite a ban, by exploiting a loophole in government sanctions.

On Saturday afternoon, a bright red tanker carrying the diesel sailed up the Thames and delivered its cargo to Gray’s, Essex.

Russian-owned or flagged vessels are now banned from British ports, but the STI Comandante is owned by the US firm Scorpio Tankers and flies the flag of the Marshall Islands.

Britain has pledged to stop importing Russian diesel by the end of the year but deliveries continue until then.

Greenpeace UK programme director Emily Armistead said: “This shipment of diesel, along with other fossil fuels that have been allowed to enter the UK since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, is filling Putin’s coffers and helping to fund the war. It has to stop.

“To stand up to Putin, bring bills down and tackle climate change, the Prime Minister’s new energy strategy must get us off fossil fuels as fast as possible, prioritise cheap, clean, homegrown renewable power – and stop the colossal energy wastage from our homes.”
