Thousands march in Bangor calling for Welsh independence

CAMPAIGNERS marched through the streets of Bangor at the weekend calling for an independent Wales.

Over 10,000 took part in the latest of six recent marches for independence, organised by YesCymru and All Under One Banner Cymru (AUOBCymru).

Marchers through the north Wales city were led by a roaring 10-metre-long Welsh dragon created by Small World Theatre.

Speaking in the shadow of Bangor cathedral independence speaker and actor Sera Cracroft said: “The dragon is a symbol of our fiery spirit and our unwavering commitment to an independent Wales.

“We are all determined that Wales is given the right to shape its own path towards independence and create a better country for all.”

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “Once, the idea of independence was ridiculed, but now it is a prominent part of our national political discourse.

“I am convinced that only the people of Wales can build a fairer nation, and spur us to be much more ambitious in order to secure the future of our children and grandchildren.”

The rally was live-streamed and also addressed by singer Bryn Fon, and Rob Idris and Joseph Gnagbo from the Welsh Language Society.

There were also videos of support from Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Catalan National Assembly president Dolors Feliu.

Welsh Language Society chairman Mr Idris said: “Independence would give us the ability to go to the root of the challenges that threaten our language and communities.”

“As the thinker Frantz Fanon said: each generation must discover its mission, fulfil it, or betray it. That is the challenge today in the fight for independence,” Mr Gnagbo  said.

“While the forces of Westminster are trying their best to stop us, they cannot stop a nation that is on a journey towards its rightful place in the world,” Mr ap Iorwerth said.

“And we all need to discuss the potential of independence with our friends and colleagues who show curiosity. Convincing them that independence is the only way to ensure success for this part of the earth that is so dear to us all,” the Plaid leader said.
