THOUSANDS of people from across the country will meet in Manchester on Sunday to demand an end to the Tories austerity policies.

The protest, organised by the People’s Assembly Against Austerity (PAAA), will coincide with the start of the Conservative Party conference.

PAAA organiser Ramona McCartney told the Star that a decade of “crippling austerity” in Britain was why it was really important for people to join them in Manchester.

“Public services are at breaking point,” she said. “There is rising homelessness, attacks on the NHS and schools and wages are remaining the same while inflation rises.

“People are finding it difficult to survive under the Tory government. People are angry and this is an opportunity to voice their anger.

“This is the weakest Tory government we have ever seen and Boris Johnson looks like he may be the shortest-serving prime minister.”

Ms McCartney said the demonstration will add to the mounting pressure, bring the government to an end and replace it with an anti-austerity government.

Demonstrators will gather at All Saints Park at noon and march to Cathedral Approach where speakers from unions, and campaigners and politicians such as Labour MPs Richard Burgon and Laura Pidcock will take to the platform.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady will warn that the government is “deliberately keeping people in the dark about the true impact” of a no-deal Brexit.

She will say: “The fallout would be felt for generations to come — hitting our jobs, livelihoods and rights at work. And putting at risk peace in Northern Ireland.

“A no-deal is not a clean break. It will jam the gears of government for years. And it would stop us rebuilding our public services and communities and repairing the damage austerity has caused.”
