Ticket examiners and conductors supporting strike action in ScotRail fight for pay justice and equality, RMT says

SCOTRAIL ticket examiners and conductors stepped up their fight for pay justice and equality yesterday with another walkout.

Rail union RMT said support was solid for the strike, which concerns equality between grades in payments for rest-day working.

While yesterday was due to be the last of six weekends of industrial action, workers will begin another six Sundays of walkouts from May 9 as RMT puts pressure on Dutch-owned rail operator Abellio to engage in talks.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said Transport Scotland had put pressure on the company to hold down costs rather than pay key workers fairly, while Abellio was “more than happy to cancel services rather than talk” to the union.

Mr Cash also slammed the “deafening silence” from political leaders in Scotland ahead of this week’s parliamentary elections.

“It is ludicrous. It must be crystal clear by now that this fight for basic equality and justice is not going away,” he said.

Transport Scotland said it was unable to consider long-term pay arrangements until the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic had passed.
