Tory ministers' back calls for BBC and schools to play the national anthem more frequently

‘Playing the national anthem more will do nothing to address this country’s woes,’ says Labour MP Ian Lavery

THE Tories were accused of having twisted priorities today after ministers backed calls for the BBC and schools to play the national anthem more frequently.

Addressing the Commons, Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell said that the government should take steps to encourage public broadcasters to play God Save the Queen every evening before the end of programming.

Culture Minister Chris Philp added: “The more that we hear the national anthem sung, frankly, the better.

“Organisations like schools are free to promote it and the more we can do in this area, the better it’ll be.”

But Labour MP Ian Lavery criticised the calls.

“I’m as patriotic as the next person, but find this flag-waving, cheering and demands for the BBC to play more of the national anthem quite nauseating,” he told the Morning Star.

“Effectively and compassionately dealing with the fact that social and economic inequalities are at record levels at the same time poverty is running rife through communities … should be the main priority of any patriotic government.

“Playing more of the [national anthem] will do nothing to address this country’s woes. We need to get real.”
