UCU announces strikes at 11 colleges over low pay offers

STAFF at 11 colleges are set to begin a three-day strike today over low pay and poor working conditions, the University and College Union (UCU) said.

It comes as UCU called off strike action at another 32 colleges after receiving pay offers at or above the 6.5 per cent recommended by the employer body, the Association of Colleges.

A UCU spokesman said it was “very disappointed” the colleges’ bosses were holding out on making similar offers.

General secretary Jo Grady and other education union reps will give speeches at a UCU rally in London today.

Dr Grady and president-elect Maxine Looby are due to be on picket lines at Capital City College in London today, Loughborough College on Wednesday and Bolton College on Thursday.

Dr Grady said: “Our members are being forced to take three days of strike action because some college bosses would rather see their staff use foodbanks than give them a cost-of-living pay rise.”
