Union calls for protection from rip-off loan charges

RENT-TO-OWN and payday lending sectors which put the most vulnerable in society at risk must be better regulated, Usdaw delegates urged yesterday.

The shopworkers’ union called at its annual delegate meeting for the government to introduce lower caps to tackle “rip-off” charges, and to provide more transparency so borrowers have clarity on the financial impact of loans.

Usdaw general secretary Paddy Lillis said working people are relying on in-work benefits and unsecured loans to make ends meet.
