Union slams British Council after it allegedly sacked a teacher who raised mental health concerns

A UNION representing English language teachers has slammed the British Council (BC) for allegedly sacking an educator who raised mental health concerns at work.

The TEFL Workers Union, part of the larger Industrial Workers of the World union, held simultaneous protests against the international cultural body and the agency it uses, the Impellam Group, on Tuesday in London, Leeds and Dublin.

The union accused bosses of dismissing a teacher, whom it named as Marina, after she raised concerns that the online scheduling systems used to allocate classes was damaging to workers’ mental health.

The move is a “detriment for whistle-blowing,” according to the union, which confirmed it is taking the BC to an employment tribunal.

TEFL Workers Union steering committee chairman Tom Liebewitz said: “Online teachers refer to the scheduling system as a ‘feeding frenzy’ and when one of them has the courage to speak up about it, we’re not about to sit back and let her be victimised.”

The BC has been contacted for comment.
