Unison Wales call on public to back campaign for NHS staff pay rise

UNISON members in Wales calling for NHS staff to be given a proper pay rise before the summer are asking the public to back their pay campaign by putting pressure on their MPs to lobby the government.

The trade union says that despite NHS pay being a devolved matter, the Welsh government can only afford to provide a decent wage rise if it receives extra funding from Westminster.

A substantial NHS England pay rise would provide that equivalent money in the devolved budget to Wales.

The union says workers deserve a minimum wage boost of at least £2,000; NHS staff in Scotland are set to receive a rise of at least 4 per cent.

Unison Cymru Wales lead officer for health Paul Summers said: “A decent wage increase paid soon could stop staff feeling unloved and taken for granted, and perhaps be enough to persuade many thinking of walking to stay.”

The Welsh government was approached for comment.
