Unite strike action resumes at GSK pharmaceutical plant in Irvine

SCAFFOLDERS, electricians, labourers and other workers in North Ayrshire launched more strike action today in a dispute over bonus payments.

About 40 outsourced engineering construction staff employed by contractor Kaefer at the Irvine plant of pharmaceutical giant GSK downed tools for the first of seven consecutive strike days.

The Unite members, who are also observing an overtime ban until April 2, are seeking an hourly bonus payment of £2.37 that is permitted under a national agreement for the industry, the union said.

General secretary Sharon Graham said that Unite “stands fully behind” the employees, who first walked out for two weeks last month.

“Kaefer is still refusing to award our members what they are entitled to and GSK, who are awash with profits, is also standing idly by and permitting this situation to needlessly escalate,” she added.

A Kaefer spokesperson claimed that the firm “supports constructive dialogue with Unite to reach a mutually acceptable resolution,” while GSK said that the site “remains open and we don’t anticipate any impact on our people or operations as a result of this industrial action.”
