UNITE members have overwhelmingly backed keeping the union’s political fund.
The fund, accumulated through subscription in the membership, is used for political campaigning and lobbying beyond the union’s industrial work, such as Unite for a Workers’ Economy, as well as backing political candidates aligned with the its aims and objectives.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham told members: “I am very pleased to advise that following a powerful and effective campaign, Unite members have voted by 91 per cent to keep Unite’s political fund.
“As you know we need the political fund to campaign on key issues such as steel, energy and the NHS.
“This vote gives us the ability to do so and ensures the workers’ political voice will not be silenced.
“As I said at the start of our campaign, hostile governments have always tried to make it harder for unions to have our say on the political decisions that affect workers and our communities.
“By voting yes to keep our political fund, we can continue to campaign.”
