Waste disposal workers in Sandwell to strike for nine days over pay

OUTSOURCED waste disposal workers in Sandwell in the West Midlands are to strike for nine days over pay.

Sandwell’s refuse collection service is contracted out to multinational privateer Serco.

The workers are members of general union GMB, who voted to strike after rejecting a pay deal amounting to a real-terms pay cut.

Strike action was suspended after Serco made a new proposal but that too has been rejected.

They will strike from June 5 to 16, affecting street cleansing, waste disposal site, waste collections, administration and waste transfer station.

GMB organiser Justine Jones said: “Serco have failed to recognise and value the work of refuse workers across our borough.

“To impose a real-terms pay cut in the midst of the worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation is a disgrace.

“The workers are clear — Serco need to get back around the table with an offer that properly reflects their value before it’s too late.”

Serco senior contract manager Tony Marston said: “It is always our intention to work collaboratively with our trade union partners in line with our recognition agreements and would urge the GMB to suspend any action while discussions are ongoing.”
