Workers at flooring factory in Manchester wins bumper pay rise

WORKERS at a flooring factory in Manchester have won a bumper pay rise after taking strike action.

More than 120 members of general union GMB at Polyflor at Whitefields launched a series of two-day strikes over pay on September 1.

They have accepted a wage increase of 9 per cent, plus a £1,320 lump sum after rejecting an original 2 per cent rise.

Workers at two non-unionised factories in Oldham and Tyneside accepted the original offer.

GMB said Polyflor’s parent company James Holstead has seen profits rise to more than £52 million — up 9.6 per cent to £291.9m for the year ending June 30.

GMB Polyflor branch secretary John Waddington said in a message to the trade union movement in Manchester: “Thanks very much for your physical attendance at our demonstrations, your messages of encouragement sent either directly to me or posted on social media and also the donations that have been made which have helped us support members.”
