XR activists blockade north London waste incinerator to protest expansion plans

CLIMATE activists blockaded a north London waste incinerator today in protest against a planned expansion of the site.

Extinction Rebellion members put up bamboo structures outside the gates of the Edmonton EcoPark incinerator, which burns waste for energy, shortly before 6am.

The group argues that the expansion of the incinerator, sited in one of the poorest boroughs in Britain, is an example of “environmental racism.”

The site is run by the Northern London Waste Authority, which serves seven other local authorities.

An Extinction Rebellion offshoot, XR Money Rebellion, said on social media: “The North London Waste Authority plans to expand incinerator capacity, sacrificing residents’ lungs to burn even more recyclables.

“This environmental racism cannot be allowed to go ahead.”

The London branch of Extinction Rebellion said: “We don’t want any more of our recycling burning [and] polluting the air of our children [and] communities with toxic, polluting greenhouse gases.”

The Metropolitan Police said two people had been arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.
