XR activists set to launch wave of protests at G7 Summit

EXTINCTION REBELLION activists will launch a wave of protests around the G7 Summit in Cornwall against the failure of participating nations to stand by their commitments on climate change.

XR kicked off a series of actions across Britain today, with a group of cyclists travelling from Shoreham, West Sussex, to reach the summit by June 10.

They will travel about 30 miles a day along the south coast, with performances along the way highlighting governments’ inaction on the climate emergency.

The week of action will end with a three-day protest outside the summit, which begins on June 11.

Activist Melissa Carrington said: “All claims of climate leadership are farcical when no major economy has implemented policies consistent with limiting global heating to 1.5°C.

“G7’s recent statements are the bare minimum that they can get away with. We need to see much greater ambition including an immediate end to financing and subsidies for all forms of fossil fuel and a massive scaling up of climate finance assistance to developing countries.”
